Volunteer Receives the Most Precious Reward
Harry Simon, a volunteer in his 80s who has been with the Beaumont (Tex.) Chapter for 30 years, saved the life of his wife by performing CPR. Harry's wife, Beatrice, suffered multiple back-to-back heart attacks so he called 911, got her to the ground and began chest compressions. Shortly after reaching the hospital the doctors told Harry that there was no brain damage and that if he had not started CPR, Beatrice would not be alive. Harry summed up his feelings by saying, “I have been volunteering with the American Red Cross for 30 years and have never been paid for my time, but today I did get paid because I saved my wife's life.”
Upon hearing this story the chapter contacted the news media and Harry and Beatrice were interviewed by NBC. Harry Simon will also receive an American Red Cross commendation for his lifesaving actions.
